The Motuora Restoration Society (MRS) is a voluntary community group set up to undertake the restoration of the island. It is an Incorporated Society and is recognized by the IRD as a Charitable Organisation. It has a membership of around 200 and is headed by an elected committee. Motuora is in the Department of Conservation estate, but since 2004 MRS has been responsible for both the restoration project and the day-to-day running of the island. Currently MRS receives an annual grant from DOC for managing the island and camp ground and has recently received some special funding from the Government as part of its funding package for restoration of the Hauraki Gulf islands. All other costs are borne by MRS. The Society employs a full time island manager, maintains the nursery and supplies the equipment required for the volunteer programme (e.g. inflatable boats, quad bike, tractor, spades). In addition the Society funds weed control work (equipment and contractors) and species introductions (equipment and operating costs) on the island. The funding that enables this work comes from organizations that distribute funds for charitable purposes, from business sponsorship and from donations made by individuals.
